Lily white

White lilies grow, stunted yet bright

The weather has taken its toll

Barred to them, the best of sun’s light

Great heights not within their control

Undefeated, these plants still grow

Forming buds that then open wide

Such brilliant, white petals show

Beauty draws attention, but hides

The struggle of past you, won’t see

Nor stunted stem holding this cup

A cup of white and pure beauty

Which the short stem proudly lifts up

The flower like a smiling face

Won’t show the hardship hidden there

People don’t see the hard won race

Just the medal you proudly wear

I long to be like lily white

But fear people will always know

The hurt, pain and the raging fight

A happy smile, I rarely show
